Introduction To The 16 Tenets Of Faith
Grace Assembly is affiliated with the Assemblies of God, a Pentecostal movement that was founded in the United States in 1914. The first Assemblies of God church in Singapore began 14 years later, in 1928. To date, the Assemblies of God Singapore has a total of 48 churches with more than 22,000 in total average weekly attendance, and its own Bible College. As an Assemblies of God church, we are also members of the Alliance of Pentecostal & Charismatic Churches of Singapore (APCCS).
The Four Core Beliefs of the Assemblies of God are Salvation, Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Divine Healing, and the Second Coming of Christ.
1. Salvation – All humans are sinners because all have sinned. Sin is resisting and rebelling against God, our Creator. Christ Jesus came to save us from our sin, and to rescue us from the penalty of sin, which is physical death. Salvation is not something we can do for ourselves, but it is received by grace through faith.
2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit – A distinctive of the Pentecostal movement is the strong belief in the continuation of the gifts of the Spirit for ministry. The Holy Spirit helps us to live a life that is pleasing to God and also empowers us to be His witnesses in the world. Baptism in the Holy Spirit is thus available and essential to every disciple of Christ.
3. Divine Healing – While on earth, everywhere that Christ went, He showed His compassion by healing the sick, and delivering the oppressed. As both spiritual and physical healing are provided for in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, we pray for divine physical healing and health. We do this without disregarding the providence of God’s common grace in granting help and relief through medical science and practice.
4. Second Coming of Christ – This expectation gives us focus in living for Kingdom purposes, and not just for temporal needs. It gives us the hope of future justice and eternal reward for our faithfulness to God’s call and mission on earth. It gives meaning to the suffering, pain, grief, loss, and injustice we see around us. The imminence of Christ’s Second Coming keeps us watchful and alert, being careful not to be ensnared by the temptation of attachment to the things of this life.
